Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with the daily life of a person. Alzheimer’s care cannot stop the disease from progressing; however, it can slow the symptoms down, and improve the quality of life. While the disease is not a normal part of aging, most people that have Alzheimer’s are 65 or older. However, it can appear in someone in his or her 40s or 50s.
Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 50-80% of dementia cases. It causes problems with a person’s memory, behavior, and the way they think. It is a progressive disease; symptoms typically develop slowly and in time become worse. In its early stages, the memory loss can be mild, in late-stage Alzheimer’s the person can lose the ability to respond to their environment or carry on a conversation with others. Eventually, the symptoms begin to interfere with everyday tasks.
The early symptom most often seen in Alzheimer’s is a person’s inability to remember new information; this happens because Alzheimer’s changes usually begin in the part of the person’s brain that affects learning. Symptoms increase and become more severe as the disease advances. The person may begin to experience disorientation; confusion about events, time, and place; unfounded suspicions about friends, family, and caregivers; mood and behavior changes; as well as difficulty swallowing, walking, and or speaking. Our team has a thorough understanding of this disease and works tirelessly to increase the quality of life through our Alzheimer’s care program.
It’s important to understand how Alzheimer’s progresses and gradually worsens over the years. Those with this disease live an average of eight years after the onset of symptoms become noticeable to their family and friends. However, survival can be from four to 20 years, depending on age, health conditions, and his or her Alzheimer’s care program. Quail Park of Visalia Memory Care Residences team takes great care in understanding the challenges patients and families face. We ensure the highest respect, dignity, and care are given at all times.
